Ironing out the wrinkles

It is no secret that the economy has hit everyone hard in certain ways… Almost every family I know has cut back in one way or another.

We have done our share to save, for example, my wife fights her way through couponmom.com and the Sunday paper, on the weekends, to locate the different brands we buy. Luckily for us, this is the last month, for a while we will need to purchase any formula! I find it so impressive when we go to the grocery store and after all is said and done we have saved close to if not more than $50 off what our regular bill would have been.
Pinchin’ our pennies led us to forgo the fun movie channels on our Dish Network Satellite. We have since enrolled in Netflix and in doing so saved us about $60 per month.

We have resorted to ironing our dress clothes for work. I have numerous meetings I have to go to each week and so I need to have pressed and starched dress shirts readily available. We really like the cleaners we use. I drive up and they know me by name without even saying a word.
They are an asian couple, as most dry cleaners are and the wife has to be the nicest lady I’ve ever known.

“Oh hello, E-dic, how’s de baby?”

But, I certainly don’t get that type of reception when I drive up and the husband is there. I show up and he immediately goes to the cash register and heads back to get my clothes. He heads out, opens my car door (this is a drive-thru cleaners, by the way) puts the clothes in the back seat and hands me a receipt and tells me the amount I owe all without any type of salutation or greeting. I hand him my credit card, sign and am on my way. I can give “credit” he is pretty efficient without the banter of talking to customers. Maybe that’s just how his egg rolls!

Okay, I cannot take recognition doing our ironing, I have probably pressed three shirts in the two years my wife and I have been married, but I guess to her it is something she wants to do for her man. I wouldn’t want her out mowing the lawn. Don’t get me wrong, we are in no way making each other do certain duties, but this is how our marriage works!

I sit here typing this blog as my wife, so lovingly, sways back and forth in her long, gray pajama pants and blue school polo, hair twisted up in a sexy mess with her white pearl earrings still in her ears that she obviously has forgotten to take out from the work day. She painstakingly slides back and forth with her silver Shark iron in her right hand and a can of Niagara starch in her left. It seems just like yesterday that we received our iron as a gift from our wedding registry, we had no idea how much use it would of gotten.

“I like this shirt honey,” said my wife while holding a blue and white checked J.Crew shirt. “You should wear it more, it looks great on you!”

“Thanks babe,” I said. “You wouldn’t believe how old it is..”

“Well, I like it.” She replied turning and rubbin' her pregnant belly. “The bigger I get the more you should watch for this to end up on my side… Oh – Shhhed$#@!!!”

I turn and see the ironing board rocking back and forth in a swaying motion that of course set our very state-of-the-art iron Shark diving to the floor in a downward dive. Please understand we have hardwood in our bedroom and the end result to something like an iron falling on it cannot be a good one.

“Oh, are you okay?” I say while I look at Laura.

“Yes.” She replied, her face now a bit pink from the panic moment that just occurred.

I know I was hoping she was okay, but a large part of me was worried about our floor. Don’t get me wrong, I was so glad to know my wife hadn’t burnt herself, but I was almost equally curious if she had burnt the floor. The floor in our dining room has already been ruined from our dogs taking the opportunity to skip the outside pee route.

“How is it?” I carefully asked.

Laura is already sensitive from being pregnant, so I wanted to tread lightly and not make her feel any worse than she already felt. Besides, she was ironing MY shirts…

“It just left a little mark,” she said while bending down to feel the mark the Shark had gashed in our hardwood.

“Wait, what is that?” I asked.

“What?” she replied, “Oh…”

She bend down again, but this time her head went under the ironing board itself with the iron resting gingerly waiting to make another nose dive into our floor, but this time it would of gone right on Laura’s neck.

"It's just a white piece of.."

“Laura.” I said quietly and softly with my eye on hers.

“Yes?” she said while standing up and missing the board by the width of an American Express card.

“All I need for you to do is bump that, burn yourself, and we are off to the ER!”

She looked at me smiling that smile she usually gives me when she knows she has done something to irritate me.

We are certainly trying to save money, but my wife better be more careful or she may end up seriously injured from “The Shark!”

Here we go again...

Alright, I want to first apologize for being so MIA and non-blogger like. I admit I have had a lot going on... I mean, I got it goin' on.

Let me just spill the beans right here, right now and get it over with. No need to go into the "I've got some major news to tell," or make you play the "Guess what" game.

We are now officially expecting... expecting what you ask? Expecting to not go out as much anymore, expecting to not go on our 2 year anniversary trip to the Bahamas and most certainly not expecting the be sleeping well in about, oh seven months.

Okay, maybe I am being just a bit alusive, but comon' it's kinda lame to just be like...
"My wife's pregnant, again!"

We discovered this about this time last week.

Let me set the scene for you.... about how we found out I mean, not the conception. I mean seriously you thought I was gonna give you THAT kind of detail.

My wife was home from work on this sunny, or was it rainy, Tuesday afternoon around 11 AM. She had just picked up our son from Daycare because she had decided to run some errands sans 7 1/2 month old. Earlier that morning I was woken up by the sounds of puking, ralphing, food being regur... okay you get the point.

"I just can't shake this," my wife, Laura, says while embracing the white, porcelin bowl.

"I guess it is just all that drainage from your sinuses," I replied.

My wife had been throwing up off and on for about three weeks and we had just assumed it was sinus drainage. (Looking back we are so stupid.)

While I was on my way to take our son, Mauldin, to daycare I called Laura on the phone.

"Why don't you stop and pick up a pregnancy test while you are out," I suggested.

"Okay, if you think I should," she said.

"I think you should," I insisted.

Fast forward to 10:30 AM, I get a phone call from Laura.

"What are you doing for lunch today?" she asked.

"Oh, I don't know, I haven't thought about it, why? You want me to come have lunch with you?"

"Yes."

I kinda played around with her for a bit on my phone on my way. I decided not to call her until I was atleast down our road.

I recieve a text saying: "Where are you?"

I proceed to dial our home number...

"I am sorry, I just left the office," I lied.

"Awh, okay, I really wish you were home," Laura said.

"Me too!"

I was actually just 2 minutes down the road and finally as I round the corner to our house I say well, I will let you go, I should be home in about 10 minutes, as I hit the garage door opener. She doesn't even notice the noise as I pull up to the house.

"Laura," I said.
"What?"
"I'm home!" I said "See you..." I see her at the door, she has a smile on her face from ear to ear.

I proceeded to push end on my phone and place it in my pocket and shut the door to my dirty, black Honda accord.

I walk inside and she gives me a huge hug.

I can tell something good is about to happen. She had surprise-face. I am assuming she made me lunch and a nice, yummy sandwich and a glass of tea would be waiting for me at the table. (It apparently doesn't take a lot to get me excited these days.)

I walk over to the table and instead of a sandwich I am handed a positive pregnancy test. I look up at Laura and she has smile and tears in her eyes.

"I'm pregnant."

I hugged her tight as I could and laughed.

"So this was my surprise?" I asked.

"Yeah! What do you think?" Laura said.
"I dunno! A Publix sub!" I said... "I'm in shock, I'm elated, I'm excited, what about you?"

"I'm still in shock too."

"Well, I guess we aren't getting a TV for Christmas anymore, huh?" I said.

"Nope, I guess we need to cancel our trip to Sandals," she continued. "Yep, so we are gonna be parents, again!"

We stood there and just starred at the pregnany test and the only thing I could say is...

"Are you sure?"

"Yes," she replied. "I took two! I'm sooooo pregnant, surprise~!"
We both look over at Mauldin in his "saucer" and say "you're gonna be a big brother, what do you think about that?"
He proceeded to let out a huge rasberry.
"I think that is how my mom is going to react," I said.

So, here we go again. We are about to embark on the adventure of parenthood, again. I guess I should now change the blog description, how does this sound?

My wife and I got married and found out we were pregnant shortly after one month of marital bliss! Then we found out we were expecting again after our son was only 7 months old. Read on to find out our trials and tribulations for a couple who are taking on the epic quest of parenthood with two kids only 15 months apart!
We are due June 25th - Excitment abounds!

Mommy intuition

This past Friday was an non-fun-filled eventful and interesting day.

I will go on the record and say, so far, it was a most uncomfortable day of 2009 yet. Why do you ask? Well, in most part due to the fact that the day ended up with my wife and I in the hospital. Yah, that never ends up being a fun day. Who really would say…

“Wow! I had an awesome day today, I went to the hospital! Whoo hoo!”

This Friday was most annoying and I will also add that I was miserable as soon as I woke up b/c of my lack of judgment the day before. I, like any idiot who visits the sun bed in January, (yah, don’t even ask) was “sun burned” and not just sun burned, but I probably had three-degree burns on my face! I was already in unbearable pain and was ready to go home and also ready for the impending weekend.

I receive a call from my wife…

“I am a little worried…” she said.

“What’s wrong?” I replied in a hushed but very concerned voice.

“Well, I am having a lot of cramping, it hurts when I stand up, and I haven’t felt Mauldin since last night.”

Okay, Laura, my wife, does not know this, but this seriously sent me into panic mode. I already have ten thousand scenarios running through my brain. Is this for real? I don't want to dismiss her motherly intuition because, I mean lets face it, she was right about the sex of our child! Who says she isn't right about this... She is a little bit more intune with Mauldin than I am.

“Laura, I am sure everything is fine, I felt him kicking a lot last night.” I say this while trying to keep her calm.

“I need you to not get upset, because I don’t want to freak out.” She says in a ‘don’t freak-out on me’ way.

“Laura, call the doctor and see what they say…”

So, after I hang up with her my heart begins pounding in my feet, brain, hands, everywhere but where my heart is located… why can’t I feel my heart in my chest? Oh there it is…

Time passes slower than watching grass grow, paint dry or watching a high school football game… why is she not calling me back??? Does she not know I am about to lose it? (In all honesty maybe three minutes went by.)

I decided to call her and find out what the doctor suggested…

Laura says in a calm, but I’m on the verge of crying way..

“I was just about to call you.”

“Okay, “ I said, “what did they say?”

“No one is on-call or able to see me at the doctor’s office at such late notice so they want me to go to the hospital to get monitored. So, I figure we can go after my meetings this afternoon…”

I sit there and I hear the words that were just uttered out of my wife’s mouth, my wife that is 30-weeks pregnant and this is certainly a very fragile time and this is our life, this is our child, this little boy has been the center of our universe for only 30 weeks now and we cannot have something happen to him now… I won’t allow it. I am gonna pull a Janice (for those of you who do not know this reference, my mom is Janice and this is a statement used whenever you ‘really’ wanna get something done) or someone better because we will be at the hospital in less than 30 minutes or … I dunno…

“Laura, you have meetings?” I said in a firm, but ‘oh no you didn’t voice.’

“this is what you are gonna do… you are gonna call those parents and let them know you have to reschedule because something very important has come up and you have to go to the HOSPITAL.”

“Okay,” she said… “I will make arrangements.”

“Alright,” I said, “I will be there as soon as you give me the word.”

So, another excruciating three minutes pass until she calls me back to pick her up. Mind you I have already emailed my boss to let her know where I was going and why and as soon as I leave all logic disappears from my psyche. I have no idea how to get to Laura’s school. Now I start freaking out,

“Oh my God! How am I gonna do this whenever she is in labor? I am gonna end up in who knows where!”

To make a long story short, I know too late, I pick her up at 2:45pm. We arrive at the hospital a few minutes after 3:00pm and she is monitored by a couple of machines for atleast 30 minutes. Of course, Mauldin, who was probably asleep because his mommy is such an active little firecracker, decides it is time to start his exercise routines and lets the nurse know he is just fine and has a heartbeat between the range of 135-150!

So, all the panicking, all the stressing, all was fine.

Although, we did learn a valuable lesson. My dear sweet, always-on-the-go wife, has got to slow down! We have a minimum of seven weeks left to go!!! Whoa…

I've been married a month & my wife is four weeks pregnant!

Alright, I decided to start this blog because, Laura, my beautiful and insanly intelligent wife started one! I thought, it was only fitting, that I gave my side of the story. So, here we go. Let me lay out the story for you... June 7th, 2008 Laura and I got married.

FAST FORWARD to June 17th, 2008 when we returned from our beautiful and long honeymoon in Jamaica. We decided when we got back it would be the time to start trying to have a baby. We had heard from many people that is takes at least a month for a woman's body to be used to being "off" of birth control and up to a year before you would conceieve. So, the planners we are, Laura and I both hopped on-line, bought a couple of books and began the process. I am a person who likes instant gratification and for it to take a year... well that is just crazy talk! I looked up to see what kind of foods made you more fertile.. and such and found out alcohol was not only bad for women, but my swimmers too! Oh, and did I forget to mention my love for Starbucks? Well, apparently caffine is a bad thing as well... In my mind I had made myself totally infertile.

Fast forward to ovulation kit! Laura bought one to speed up the process... it is kind of a "cheat code" in a video game... kind of gives you the idea of when to "strike" so to speak! So, after cutting out all things "bad for fertility"... and following the "ovulation codes" all we could do was wait. But, patience is not im my vocabulary... I literaly had to look up how to spell the word. Just kiddin', but seriously, Laura had already decided she wasn't preggo. And, after we had come to accept our fate that we'd need to wait a little while (that is a totally different story and you all will think we are nuts, but I will address that reason at a later date.)Laura suprised me at home on July 16th that she had gotten a positive reading on a pregnancy test! We told my family and her family almost instantly!!! But, would they be happy??? How would they react? Well, in a word, ecstatic!

A lot of people, maybe 10 total (hahaha) do not know that we are pregnant. Thanks to my family back home in Dalton, that is... My mom, sister, Mandy and Aunt Willena, I am sure, took care of that. And, I say "we" are pregnant because it was a decision made by Laura and I to take on this epic adventure of parenthood so early on. We are in this together 100%. And, no, let me put this idea to rest, our new bundle of joy, ever-so happily growing inside of Laura's ever-expanding belly, was not a "honeymoon baby!" We figured it would be a bad idea to ingest lots of free alcohol during our honeymoon and so carelessly get pregnant... so we decided to wait until we got home to starting "trying!"

With that said, here we are... 5 weeks in and awaiting our first doctor's visit on August 13th. I am really, really excited!!!! I probably tell 2 people a day, sorry, but it is just a difficult thing to not be pumped up about. I mean, I am a fertile man who can actually reproduce.. and in my eyes, that is a great thing to be happy about.

Well, there will be so much more to tell during the next nine months of newness...
So, stay tuned for what's to come!
