Breaking Water

A night does not go by, anymore, where I do not have a difficult time staying asleep.

If my wife, Laura, gets out of bed, I immediately wonder…

“Is this it!?”

I lay in the bed and hope and pray her water does not break so I am lying in a pool of her amniotic fluid. But, it may just so happen… although it would be a shame because we have a really nice KING SIZE tempurpedic mattress. I love our bed… and yes, we have put down some pads, but I’m sure when it does happen, if it were to happen at night, she would be laying up against me and not where the pad is…

I imagine, statistically, Laura will go into labor when I am NOT with her… I am at work from 8am-4:30pm, and on Tuesdays I leave from work to go to school until 10:45pm… Thursdays, I have class, after work, until 7:15pm. But, let’s just hope it happens when I am with her, but just NOT at 3am in our bed.

I know, I know… “you can’t plan it!” Although, I can hope… so leave me with that.

I have been having dreams about Laura giving birth… one dream my son, Mauldin, came out already walking… that was interesting to say the least. Laura insists he gets lower everyday, and who am I to disagree with her.. it’s her body! But, honestly, I can’t tell at all. All I can really tell is he is still in there; which is good, because we are going to be at 35 weeks this Friday! We have just a little over two weeks until he is considered full-term and after that it’s all good.

I think Laura has begun to start really wanting him to come because she is pretty uncomfortable. She wants to start getting her body back… she wants to be active again. I will somewhat agree… because it is hard to sit around the house and know we could go out and go to the movies or out to dinner, but we can’t go too far or be gone too long because she gets so uncomfortable so easy. In all honesty, I am ready to have the little bundle of joy here so we can finally see the little person who has been kicking and rolling around in my wife’s womb for the past few months. It is amazing how it has gone by so fast and it feels like just a few weeks ago we had come to the conclusion we weren’t gonna get pregnant and the next thing I know we’re out picking out various toys and bibs at babies-r-us!

So, basically we have two weeks to go… and then… if he hasn’t decided to come… we can either go to Ippilitos for Laura to have some EGGPLANT Parmesan, or… well there are ways, riiiight?

Rachel from friends giving birth…

Invest in a water-proof mattress cover please. We did, thankfully. They only cost about $40 for a king size. Well worth the money considering the alternative.

Aww! You'll be okay- I'd take iVegas Family's advice! ;-)

I dreamed Lukas was born talking, so dreams like that are normal. Most water breaking is not as fluid as they make it out to be so you will most likely be ok.

Breaking the water isn't easy though, man. The Boss beat me (yes, beat me) at a game of 21 the day before the baby came and her water didn't bust (and she was jumping and running everywhere!).

Of course, I totally let her win, but still ...

And yeah, get the mattress cover. We didn't because we're dumb, but luckily all that stuff happened at the hospital!

O lord Eric.... I have been there but luckly my water broke in the bathroom floor! Stop worrying so much. Your going to freak yourself out! I bet that little baby of yours is going to be a doll! But really stop worrying so much!!

Just remember, it is highly unlikely that it will actually break (if at all) while she is laying down. The baby's head acts like a cork. It is when she stands up from the bed that you need to worry! LOL I have been there though and was also paranoid about it happening to me! I sat on a towel at work and then got laughed at saying if my water did break, the towel would do nothing for my poor little chair! LOL! (It's a lot!!!)

My friend was out gambeling in a casino when her water broke, and it was a gushing break. Her flip flops were squeaking as she walked out of the casino! LOL! Still makes me laugh...

Pretty exciting, man! First baby. It's gonna be an adventure! My wife's water broke with our singleton girl (first kid, six years ago) in bed, after she'd already taken a bath. It wasn't too messy, and I think we had a pad. I think there was a lot less than people made me think.

I used to have dreams about my boys being born as toddlers of two or three as well. As for the waters breaking, I was so worried about ruining our mattress the first time around, but didn't even think about it the second time. Both times they broke elsewhere though, the second time only after I started pushing! Buy a mattress protector so you sleep better - you need the rest before Mauldin arrives!

i'm sorry i don't have any advice. i just had no idea guys worried about getting splashed or soaked in the breaking of the water. lol i think that is hysterical. especially how you said it would be your luck for her to be snugged up against you. HA too funny.

oh, and about that tempurpedic bed...do you realllly like it? i got the sleep comfort a few years agao and i'm thinking i really should have got the tempur one, sigh.

I forgot to comment here about how funny the image of you being worried about your bed being soaked when the water breaks. So hilarious actually.

My wife had to be induced. When the waters were broken I remember very clearly thinking, "Oh. That's what "breaking water" means."
